A small site about writing short
I collect captions. Not because the internet needs another list, but because writing well in nine words is harder than writing well in ninety, and almost nobody talks about how it's done.
The site started in March 2020 as a notes file. It's still one person, still no advertising, still no newsletter I'll nag you to join.
Where to start
Collections
Grouped by occasion rather than by keyword — a walk, a move, a birthday you'd rather skip.
Writing notes
Why some captions land and others read like a greetings card. With examples, including bad ones of mine.
Archive
Everything by date, oldest first. Some of it I'd write differently now and I've said so in place.
Three captions and why they work
| Caption | Why |
|---|---|
| Same bench, different year. | Two nouns, one shift in time. The reader does the rest. |
| Took the long way on purpose. | "On purpose" carries the whole thing. Without it, it's a fact. |
| Not everything has to be a milestone. | Works because it argues with the format it's posted in. |
What this site isn't
It isn't a generator. There's no box where you type a mood and receive forty captions, because forty captions is exactly the problem. Choosing between three is work. Choosing between forty is paralysis, and the result usually reads like nobody wrote it.
Everything here is free to use. If you post a caption from a collection you don't need to credit me — that would be a strange way to use a caption. Please don't republish whole collections as your own, though.
