I'm Rosie Hartland. I live in Bristol and work in a library. This site is not my job and has never tried to be.

Why it exists

In early 2020 I kept a text file of lines I liked — from books, from overheard conversations, from my own drafts. A friend asked me to send it. Then another. Putting it on a page was easier than emailing it.

The name was a joke that stuck. A colleague called me the captions guru when I helped with a work post, and the domain was available for under ten pounds.

How it's paid for

Out of my own pocket. Hosting is about six pounds a month. There's no advertising, no sponsorship, no affiliate links and nothing for sale. If that ever changes I'll say so on this page before it happens, not after.

What I don't do

• I don't write captions to order, paid or unpaid — I tried in 2022 and disliked it,
• I don't accept guest posts,
• I don't run a course, and if you see one with this name it isn't mine.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, badly worded or lifted from somewhere without credit, tell me and I'll fix it and say what changed. Several lines in the early collections came from my notes without a source and I've since removed the ones I couldn't trace.
